On 6 February 2020 Kate made history by becoming the first woman to deliver a Budget statement at either of the Scottish or Westminster Parliaments. On 17 February 2020, she was promoted to the role of Cabinet Secretary for Finance - again the first woman to hold the post, which she held until 2021.
Until 2021, Kate assisted several projects in the constituency of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch to help improve tourism infrastructure. As well as lobbying for the setting up of the Scottish Government's Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund, almost half of the original £6 million funding went to places in the constituency.
During her time as an MSP, Kate participated in several cross party groups at Holyrood including Crofting, Gaelic, Human Trafficking, Palliative Care and Rural Policy. During her first two years at Holyrood she was named a finalist for Holyrood magazine’s backbencher of the Year for 2017/18.
A fluent Gaelic speaker, Kate made history in early 2018 by becoming the first female MSP to give a plenary speech entirely in Gaelic in the current Scottish Parliament chamber.
On 27 June 2018 she was appointed as Minister for Public Finance and Digital Economy. Later that year she won the "One to Watch" category at the annual Scottish Politician of the Year awards, having been runner-up the previous year.
Kate is the SNP Candidate for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch. She is from Dingwall, although she spent part of her upbringing in Glasgow and India. She served as MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch between 2016 and 2021. Prior to that Kate was employed as an accountant in the banking industry, having studied History at the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh.
As a backbencher from 2016 to 2018, she served on the Scottish Parliament’s Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee, the Standards, Procedures and Public Appointments Committee, the Health and Sport Committee and the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee. She also served as Parliamentary Liaison Officer for Finance and the Constitution.
Kate Forbes is the SNP candidate for the Skye, Lochaber & Badenoch constituency (which includes Dingwall, the Black Isle & the Great Glen). She was the constituency MSP for the parliamentary term 2016-21 as well as Cabinet Secretary for Finance in the Scottish Government.
As the Candidate, Kate is determined to continue working hard for her constituents if re-elected, and if you would like to meet with Kate, or get in touch, see here on how to do so.
In normal times, I would be delighted to travel throughout the constituency of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch meeting many of the amazing people running clubs and organisations in both the business and voluntary sector. These organisations are a key part of the economy and social life in Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch.
I have been proud to represent an area that is rich in successful businesses and entrepreneurs between 2016 and 2021. I spent much of my time speaking with constituents learning about the challenges they face in their unique sectors and seeing how I can help them to develop into the future.
